Baby Carrier Attachment for a Wheelchair

Project Type: Independent

Duration: June 2018 - June 2019

I independently designed and built this baby carrier attachment for a wheelchair in order to give a parent in a wheelchair more independence with their child. I worked with a specific client on this project and remained in constant communication with her to ensure that my product met her needs and provided a useful solution. I researched child transportation and accessories for wheelchairs, in order to invent an original product that combines the two functions.

Given the risk of short product life, I accounted for the rapid growth rates of children; young babies will rest in a reclining position – then toddlers can sit upright. Later, the attachment can even carry shopping or small suitcases. For flexibility and strength, the frame is built from interconnected aluminum and bamboo. To build my product, I worked with a 3D printer, laser cutter, engineering lathe, milling machine, tube bender, and other hand tools.
